    Hyperuniformity in amorphous speckle patterns

    Hyperuniform structures possess the ability to confine and drive light, although their fabrication is extremely challenging. Here we demonstrate that speckle patters obtained by a superposition of randomly arranged sources of Bessel beams can be used to generate hyperunifrom scalar fields. By exploiting laser light tailored with a spatial filter, we experimentally produce (without requiring any computational power) a speckle pattern possessing maxima at locations corresponding to a hyperuniform distribution. By properly filtering out intensity fluctuation from the same speckle pattern, it is possible to retrieve an intensity profile satisfying the hyperuniformity requirements. Our findings are supported by extensive numerical simulations.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

    Abstract Following the increasing awareness on the global warming, international governments have set up severe targets on CO2 emission in transportation sector: the overcoming of these limits produces a fine which directly influences the market value of the vehicle. Moreover, concerning the traditional pollutants, they still remain targeted by future EURO6(b-c-d) limits. Charge air cooling, in turbocharged diesel engines, is widely used to increase air density, improve cylinder filling and, definitively, engine volumetric efficiency. This is usually done through a heat exchanger fed by environmental air positioned after the charge air compression: the cooling is strictly related to vehicle speed, dedicated radiator positioning, engine operating point and environmental temperature. All these factors lead to an in-cylinder intake air temperature in the 40-70°C range. A refrigerating unit, featuring an evaporator, suitably placed inside the intake manifold, could provide an additional cooling. Such an option is not so difficult to be implemented considering that a conditioning unit is already present on board for cabin comfort. This unit often is over-designed and frequently under-employed. In this paper an evaporator was placed on the intake line of a turbocharged diesel engine, available on a test bench, and the effects of the under-cooling of the charge air have been experimentally assessed. The evaporator is fed by an air refrigeration unit present on vehicle board for cabin conditioning. Fuel consumption saving has been observed as well as a sensible pollutants reduction, taking obviously into account the mechanical power required by the compressor

    Abstract The stringent regulations on fuel saving and emissions reduction in the transportation sector have become game-raisers in the development of present internal combustion engines for road applications, even if under-the-hood space constraints, downsizing and down-weighting prevent from adopting radical changes in the engine layout. Charge air cooling is the standard in present turbocharged diesel engines, to the point that a dedicated heat exchanger, fed by environmental air, is located downstream the compressor. The paper proves the option of an additional cooling through the cabin-heating unit - usually over-sized with respect to normal operation - very effective to increase charge air density and improve cylinder filling. The intercooler downstream the compressor would be provided with a lower thermal load, hence calling for smaller heat exchange surfaces, leading to reduced weight, space saving and no increased layout complexity. By pushing this idea forward, a properly sized cabin-heating unit could even supply enough air cooling to replace the intercooler instead of just assisting it, further raising the weight/space/layout advantages. In presence of an additional heat exchanger, the cooling efficiency would be no longer related to the vehicle speed and the benefit in terms of cylinder filling could be kept to the desired value on a wider operating range for the engine. Plus, the lower combustion temperatures associated with both a colder air and a more diluted charge approaching the chamber would also result in a more regular combustion process, in spite of a moderate penalty on the thermodynamic efficiency. The additional fuel consumption to compress the cooling fluid is always offset by the fuel saving with respect to normal operation and a beneficial effect is appreciated on emissions. Nonetheless, major variables to account for when evaluating the feasibility of such a layout are (i) the impact it has on the equilibrium of the turbocharger, i.e. on the efficiency at each operating point, (ii) to what extent the presence of a colder air affects the turbine/compressor matching and (iii) the rack position the ECU fixes at the VGT, to face both pressure losses at the additional evaporator and the different enthalpy content for both the air at the compressor outlet and the exhaust gases at the turbine inlet. A comprehensive experimental activity supported by a detailed 1D model of the engine unit, aimed at assessing the benefits of the air under-cooling, allowed to select the most appropriate cooling layout and, once validated based on the experimental evidence, to investigate the equilibrium at the turbocharger

    Phase-Retrieved Tomography enables imaging of a Tumor Spheroid in Mesoscopy Regime

    Optical tomographic imaging of biological specimen bases its reliability on the combination of both accurate experimental measures and advanced computational techniques. In general, due to high scattering and absorption in most of the tissues, multi view geometries are required to reduce diffuse halo and blurring in the reconstructions. Scanning processes are used to acquire the data but they inevitably introduces perturbation, negating the assumption of aligned measures. Here we propose an innovative, registration free, imaging protocol implemented to image a human tumor spheroid at mesoscopic regime. The technique relies on the calculation of autocorrelation sinogram and object autocorrelation, finalizing the tomographic reconstruction via a three dimensional Gerchberg Saxton algorithm that retrieves the missing phase information. Our method is conceptually simple and focuses on single image acquisition, regardless of the specimen position in the camera plane. We demonstrate increased deep resolution abilities, not achievable with the current approaches, rendering the data alignment process obsolete.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure

    Inter-society consensus for the use of inhaled corticosteroids in infants, children and adolescents with airway diseases

    Background: In 2019, a multidisciplinary panel of experts from eight Italian scientific paediatric societies developed a consensus document for the use of inhaled corticosteroids in the management and prevention of the most common paediatric airways disorders. The aim is to provide healthcare providers with a multidisciplinary document including indications useful in the clinical practice. The consensus document was intended to be addressed to paediatricians who work in the Paediatric Divisions, the Primary Care Services and the Emergency Departments, as well as to Residents or PhD students, paediatric nurses and specialists or consultants in paediatric pulmonology, allergy, infectious diseases, and ear, nose, and throat medicine. Methods: Clinical questions identifying Population, Intervention(s), Comparison and Outcome(s) were addressed by methodologists and a general agreement on the topics and the strength of the recommendations (according to the GRADE system) was obtained following the Delphi method. The literature selection included secondary sources such as evidence-based guidelines and systematic reviews and was integrated with primary studies subsequently published. Results: The expert panel provided a number of recommendations on the use of inhaled corticosteroids in preschool wheezing, bronchial asthma, allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, acute and chronic rhinosinusitis, adenoid hypertrophy, laryngitis and laryngospasm. Conclusions: We provided a multidisciplinary update on the current recommendations for the management and prevention of the most common paediatric airways disorders requiring inhaled corticosteroids, in order to share useful indications, identify gaps in knowledge and drive future research

    Risk factors associated with adverse fetal outcomes in pregnancies affected by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): a secondary analysis of the WAPM study on COVID-19.

    Objectives To evaluate the strength of association between maternal and pregnancy characteristics and the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes in pregnancies with laboratory confirmed COVID-19. Methods Secondary analysis of a multinational, cohort study on all consecutive pregnant women with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 from February 1, 2020 to April 30, 2020 from 73 centers from 22 different countries. A confirmed case of COVID-19 was defined as a positive result on real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) assay of nasal and pharyngeal swab specimens. The primary outcome was a composite adverse fetal outcome, defined as the presence of either abortion (pregnancy loss before 22 weeks of gestations), stillbirth (intrauterine fetal death after 22 weeks of gestation), neonatal death (death of a live-born infant within the first 28 days of life), and perinatal death (either stillbirth or neonatal death). Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate parameters independently associated with the primary outcome. Logistic regression was reported as odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results Mean gestational age at diagnosis was 30.6+/-9.5 weeks, with 8.0% of women being diagnosed in the first, 22.2% in the second and 69.8% in the third trimester of pregnancy. There were six miscarriage (2.3%), six intrauterine device (IUD) (2.3) and 5 (2.0%) neonatal deaths, with an overall rate of perinatal death of 4.2% (11/265), thus resulting into 17 cases experiencing and 226 not experiencing composite adverse fetal outcome. Neither stillbirths nor neonatal deaths had congenital anomalies found at antenatal or postnatal evaluation. Furthermore, none of the cases experiencing IUD had signs of impending demise at arterial or venous Doppler. Neonatal deaths were all considered as prematurity-related adverse events. Of the 250 live-born neonates, one (0.4%) was found positive at RT-PCR pharyngeal swabs performed after delivery. The mother was tested positive during the third trimester of pregnancy. The newborn was asymptomatic and had negative RT-PCR test after 14 days of life.     The production of tt‟ , W+bb‟ and W+cc‟ is studied in the forward region of proton–proton collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.98±0.02 fb−1 . The W bosons are reconstructed in the decays W→ℓΜ , where ℓ denotes muon or electron, while the b and c quarks are reconstructed as jets.     Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia

    Schizophrenia has a heritability of 60-80%1, much of which is attributable to common risk alleles. Here, in a two-stage genome-wide association study of up to 76,755 individuals with schizophrenia and 243,649 control individuals, we report common variant associations at 287 distinct genomic loci. Associations were concentrated in genes that are expressed in excitatory and inhibitory neurons of the central nervous system, but not in other tissues or cell types. Using fine-mapping and functional genomic data, we identify 120 genes (106 protein-coding) that are likely to underpin associations at some of these loci, including 16 genes with credible causal non-synonymous or untranslated region variation. We also implicate fundamental processes related to neuronal function, including synaptic organization, differentiation and transmission. Fine-mapped candidates were enriched for genes associated with rare disruptive coding variants in people with schizophrenia, including the glutamate receptor subunit GRIN2A and transcription factor SP4, and were also enriched for genes implicated by such variants in neurodevelopmental disorders. We identify biological processes relevant to schizophrenia pathophysiology; show convergence of common and rare variant associations in schizophrenia and neurodevelopmental disorders; and provide a resource of prioritized genes and variants to advance mechanistic studies
